Concert review:
Maybe I should tell what happened in La Riviera Hall on February the 8th of 2015 with a totally objective vision, maybe I should talk about the sound quality, how the musicians performed their instruments, the setlist and how the room got filled up. But unfortunately I can't do that, for me this gig was something more than a night of good music.
I'm not talking about the mindless opinion a fan may have sometimes, because I've never been really a fan of any band. I know when I like something and when I don't. I know how to praise or criticize when it's required but this gig had a special meaning for me. It dates back eight years ago... I had travelled from Tenerife, which is quite an adventure by itself (it's not like taking the tube), to see one of my favourite bands, Amon Amarth, and when I reached the event we were told that we were not going to see them because of a puncture in one of the wheels of their bus on their road from Portugal. Such is life. The only thing that saved my trip from being a complete disaster was seeing a still interesting Dimmu Borgir. That was years ago. I had others opportunities of seeing them after that occasion but it wasn't until this year that I was guided under the northern star to this battle in Valhalla.
A cold afternoon in Madrid settled the mood for what was going to be a Nordic evening. At 7.00pm the band Savage Messiah started heating the atmosphere. This young band from London formed in 2007 has an interesting thrash metal sound with some heavy touches maybe influenced by the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal). Dave Silver (lead vocals and guitar), Joff Bailey (guitar), Mira Slama (bass) and Andrea Gorio (drums) based their gig mainly on their latest album "The Fateful Dark". They work very well together with a good live performance, giving way to each other for pluckings or other important moments in every song in a natural and energetic way. It should be pointed out Dave's interesting melodic and growly voice and his high notes with the speed technique of the rest of the group supported the powerful drums beating the atmosphere. Also, I must mention that the band members at the end of the gigs were present at the merchandising stand signing autographs and pictures to everybody that requested it.
Huntress was the band that had to keep the already warmed up and expectant crowd. The quality of their musicians was unquestionable, but without any doubt, the main focus is its vocalist Jill Janus. A dramatic and powerful voice with a magnetic presence that makes you wonder whether she's human or a banshee. After "Destroy your life" they played a song called "Flesh" that will be part in their next album that will be released next summer. Some simple but visual clothing changes between songs completed the staging of the gestural vocalist. The rage and darkness of their songs contrasted with the lively and easy-going californian members of the band. Huntress surprised the public with a song composed by Lemmy Klimster himslef, as they told the crowd. Jill asked the lead vocalist of Motörhead to make a song about love and so he called it "I want to fuck you to death". The song was played meanwhile the guitarist, Blake Meahl, made his own spanish/mexican translation of the lyrics for the public in a hilarious way, translating the title as Te voy a chingar en el huerto (something like I'm gonna fuck u in the garden).
The sound technicians and the roadies of Amon Amarth made their entrance and prepared everything for the band. As the backdrop descended with the cover of their new album "Deceiver of the Gods", the public started cheering and the murmuring increased, the public had had fun with the other previous bands, but they were there for the Swedish. During the interval a song by Iron Maiden was played. Then an epic intro gave way to the entrance of the vikings, "Father of the wolf" was the opening song, a battle hymn from their latest album (we recommend the official video). The guitarists Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Södeberg had a more introverted attitude in the stage than the bass player Ted Lundström and, without any doubt, Johan Hegg made his best to connect with the public and even said a few words in Spanish. Between public and band a visible energy unleashed with songs like "Death in fire" or "Guardians of Asgard", accompanied by shouts and chorus from the whole room while Johan Hegg wielded a hammer in "Twilight of the Thunder God". All those present cheered up in a berserker happiness when "The Pursuit of Vikings", the insignia of the band, was played ending the gig.
Everything was accompanied with a good use of the lights, steam explosions and backdrop changes that gave the proper atmosphere to the gig, Johan drinking from his horn... everything prepared for a proper viking night! The only thing that didn't work out to me was the sound, the volume of the guitars wasn't at the height of the band. The drums and bass sometimes even over powered the so characteristic melodies of the band. Even so the public left humming the songs anyway.
CRÓNICA:
Tal vez debería relatar lo que aconteció en la sala LA RIVIERA el día 8 de febrero de 2015 con una visión totalmente objetiva, hablar de la calidad del sonido, de la ejecución de los músicos a través de sus instrumentos, setlist y cuanto se llenó la sala pero no puedo hacer eso, para mi este concierto era más que una velada de buena música. No hablo desde el juicio vehemente que puede llegar a tener en ocasiones un fan, porque nunca he sido fan de ningún grupo, se cuando algo me gusta y cuando me gusta menos, se alabar y criticar cuando es necesario pero este concierto me tocaba la fibra sensible ya que esto me remonta a 8 años atrás. Viajar desde Tenerife, que ya de por si es una pequeña aventura, no es lo mismo que coger dos líneas de metro, a ver a una de tus bandas favoritas, Amon Amarth y que en la entrada de esta misma sala te enteres de que no vas a verlos porque su transporte tuvo un pinchazo viniendo de Portugal no es un plato de buen gusto para nadie. Solo el ver a unos Dimmu Borgir con una formación aún espectacular en aquel 2007 hizo que no fuera un desastre total.
Tuve otras oportunidades de verlos después de esa ocasión pero no fue hasta este 2015 que "Under the northern star" no fui guiado de nuevo a esta batalla en el vahalla.
Una tarde fría madrileña que hacía un guiño al frio nórdico daba entrada poco después de las 19:00 a la banda Savage Messiah que venían con todo para calentar el ambiente. Esta joven banda londinense formada en el 2007 tienen un sonido interesante entre el thrash metal y toques de heavy tal vez influenciado por el NWOBHM.
Dave Silver a la voz y guitarra, Joff Bailey a la guitarra, Mira Slama al bajo y Andrea Gorio a la batería basaron principalmente su concierto en su último álbum "The Fateful Dark". Una banda muy compenetrada, muchas tablas en el escenario, dándose paso unos a otros en punteos o momentos importantes de cada tema de forma natural y enérgica. Destacar la interesante voz melódica rasgada intercalada de agudos de Dave y la veloz técnica de todos apoyada con un batería que sudaba de verdad las baquetas. Mencionar también que los miembros de la banda al finalizar los conciertos estuvieron al lado del stand de merch firmando discos y haciéndose fotos con todo el que lo deseó.
Huntress fue la banda que debía mantener el ya caliente y expectante público. La calidad de sus músicos es sin duda incuestionable pero sin duda el foco principal de esta banda es su cantante Jill Janus, una voz estriónica y poderosa y una magnética presencia que te hace dudar en ocasiones que sea humana y no una banshee.
Tras "Destroy Your Life" tocaron un tema, creo recordar que se llamará "Flesh", que será parte de su próximo disco que saldrá a la luz el próximo verano. Algunos cambios de vestuario simples pero que llamaban la atención entre tema y tema acompañaban a la puesta en escena de la gestual Jill. La rabia y oscuridad de sus temas hacían contraste con la cercanía y ganas de cachondeo de estos californianos que sorprendieron al público con momentos como la presentación de un tema el cual Jill pidió a Lemmy Kilmister que lo compusiera para su banda, por lo visto ella le pidió que fuera una canción de amor y el lo tituló "I Want To Fuck You to Death". Mientras el guitarrista Blake Meahl nos traducía todo en versión mejicana hilarante, según su traducción el tema de Lemmy se titulaba "Te voy a chingar en el huerto", un momento muy divertido.
Los técnicos de sonido y staff de Amon Amarth se dispusieron a preparar sonido y escenario para la banda. En cuanto descendió el fondo de telón con la portada de su último disco "Deceiver of the Gods" la gente empezó a vitorear y el murmullo acrecentó, en la actitud de la gente se veía que lo habían pasado bien con los teloneros pero estaban aquí principalmente para disfrutar de los suecos. Durante la espera suena un tema de Iron Maiden y luego se oye una intro épica para dar paso poco a poco a la entrada de los vikingos. "Father of the Wolf" fue el tema encargado de abrir el concierto, un himno de batalla de su último disco, os recomiendo el video oficial.
Los guitarristas Olavi Mikkonen y Johan Söderberg tienen en el escenario una actitud algo más introvertida que el bajista Ted Lundström y sin duda Johan Hegg hace lo posible con conectar con el público y en ocasiones decir algunas palabras en español.
Destacar la energía que se desato entre banda y público con temas como "Death in Fire", "Guardians of Asgaard" acompañada con gritos y coros de toda la sala y un Johan Hegg blandiendo un martillo en "Twilight of the Thunder God". Todos los presentes entraron en felicidad berserk al oír una de las canciones estandarte de la banda, "The Pursuit of Vikings" que cerró el concierto.
Todo esto apoyado también en un juego de luces interesante que daba una atmósfera adecuada, explosiones de humo y cambios de fondo de escenario, Johan bebiendo de su cuerno... lo único que me desagradó fue el sonido, el volumen de las guitarras no estuvo a la altura de la banda y de la atronadora batería y bajo que en ocasiones se comían las tan importantes melodías que caracterizan a esta banda, aún así no faltó ocasión para que los presentes las tarareasen.
